Peugeot 505 was an executive car produced by the France manufacturer
Peugeot from 1979 to 1992 in Sochaux, France. It was also manufactured outside France, for example in
Argentina by Sevel from 1981 to 1995,
China, Indonesia and Nigeria.
History
The 505 was the replacement for the Peugeot 504 (although European production of that car continued until 1983, and it is still sold in developing markets today), and was available in sedan and station wagon body styles, with the Family Estate model featuring 8-seats. The styling was similar to the 504. It is known as the "Work Horse" of Africa today. It is a very popular car in many African countries.
The 505 was praised by contemporary
journalists for its ride and handling, especially on rough and unmade roads; perhaps one reason for its popularity in less developed countries. The 505 also had good ground clearance; in the 1980s,
Dangel made a
four-wheel drive version of the 505 estate equipped with either the intercooled turbodiesel 110
Horsepower (81
Watt#Kilowatt) engine or the 130 hp 2.2 L petrol (96 kW) engine. The four wheel drive 505 also had shorter gear ratios.
The range was given a facelift (product), including an all new interior, in 1986,but European Peugeot 505 production began to wind down following the launch of the smaller Peugeot 405 at the end of 1987, and ended in 1992, some time after the introduction of the larger Peugeot 605, although the car is still manufactured in Africa.
In some countries such as
France and
Germany, the 505 estate was used as an ambulance, a funeral car, police car, military vehicle and as a road maintenance vehicle. There were prototypes of 505 coupés and 505 trucks, and in France many people have modified 505s into pickup trucks themselves.
The 505 was one of the last Peugeot models to be sold in the
United States, with sedan sales ending there in 1990 and wagon sales in 1991. The last versions sold had
PRV's 2.8 V6 engine only. Both the sedan (saloon) and station wagon (estate). 505s were also sold in
Australia,
Argentina,
Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroën Automobile, and New Zealand. In
New York City, Peugeot 505s were used as
taxicabs.
Mechanical Configuration
The car was FR layout, with longitudinally mounted engines. The suspension system consisted of MacPherson struts and coil springs at the front and semi-trailing arms with coil springs at the rear, with body-mounted differential and constant-velocity joints. A live axle with Panhard rod was used at the rear by the station wagon (and some sedans built in Argentina). The car used
disc brakes at the front, and either
disc brakes or
drum brakes at the rear, depending on the model. The steering was a
rack and pinion system, which was
power steering on most models.
Family Estate
The family estate, with its third row of bench seats (giving a total of 8 forward-facing seats), was popular with larger families and used as a taxi, and was a rival for the
Renault 21, and for the then new class of
Multi-purpose vehicle vehicles such as the Renault Espace. The two rows of rear seats could be folded to give a completely flat load area, with 1.94 cubic metres of load capacity. The total load carrying capacity is 590 kg. When released, it was hailed as a luxury touring wagon.
Engines
A range of
diesel and
petrol engines were offered. Peugeot engine codes
The diesel engines were all straight-4:
- 2304cc "XD2" engine (70 hp (49 kW)) from the Peugeot 504 was used on early models, and was supplied by Peugeot to Ford for their Sierra model.
- 2304cc "XD2C" engine (70 hp (49 kW))
- 2304cc "XD2S" turbocharged engine that produced 80 hp (60 kW)
- 2498cc "XD3" engine that produced 75 hp
- 2498cc "XD3T" turbocharged engine that produced 95 hp (70 kW) was used on 1985 (Some of the early 1985 505s still had the XD2S however) and newer models.
- 2498cc "XD3TE" turbocharged diesel engine with 110-115 hp (79 kW) with a turbocharger, intercooler, and electronic fuel injection was introduced in 1987.
The petrol engines had either 4 cylinders or 6 cylinders:
- 1796cc Straight-4 "XM7A" engine
- 1971cc Straight-4 "XN1/XN1A" engine had 96 hp (71 kW)
- 1995cc Straight-4 Douvrin engine engine (OHC, Robert Bosch GmbH K-Jetronic fuel injection) had 110 hp (81 kW) - codeveloped by Peugeot and Renault.
- 2165cc Straight-4 Douvrin engine engine (OHC, Robert Bosch GmbH K-Jetronic fuel injection) used on pre-1986 models. This was a longer stroke version of the "ZEJK" engine.
- 2165cc Straight-4 Douvrin engine engine (OHC, Robert Bosch GmbH L-Jetronic fuel injection, Compression ratio: (9.8:1) ) with 130 hp (96 kW) was used on 505 GTI models.
- 2155cc turbocharged Simca Type 180 engine (OHC, Robert Bosch GmbH LU-Jetronic fuel injection, Compression ratio: (7.5:1) ), producing 142 hp.
- 2155cc intercooled, turbocharged Simca Type 180 engine (OHC, Robert Bosch GmbH LU-Jetronic fuel injection, Compression ratio: (7.5:1) ), producing 150 hp (111 kW).
- 2155cc intercooled, turbocharged Simca Type 180 engine (OHC, Robert Bosch GmbH LU-Jetronic fuel injection, Compression ratio: (7.5:1) ), producing 160 hp (119 kW). 180 hp / 134 kW in 505 saloons. This motor was equipped with an electronic boost controller.
- 2849cc 6-cylinder (V6) engine ("ZN3J", a version of the PRV engine) with 170 hp (125 kW) was used on 505 V6 models.
Specifications
505 models varied very much in specifications. Base
SRD cars with the 2304 cc diesel engine didn't even have power steering, but the
GTD Turbo, the
GTI, the V6 and the TI all had power steering, central locking doors, air conditioning, a 5-speed manual transmission,
moonroof (except the GTD Turbo), and front fog lights. In the V6, the power steering was speed sensitive, the central locking doors came with an infrared remote, and the heating and ventiliation systems included climate control. A 3-speed
automatic transmission was available on early 505s, which was later replaced a 4-speed unit. The most durable 505 model proved to be the
GTD with a 5-speed manual transmission. In Australia, the 505 was sold as a
GR,
SR,
STi or

SR or
GTi 8-seater station wagon, all with petrol engines. Very few
GRD and
SRD diesel engined 505s were sold in Australia. The Series II update saw the
SR replaced with an
SLi. The
TI was not released in Australia, and the diesel models are rare.
The United States and Canada had their own 505 chassis. Notable differences were; Gas Tank on rightside of car, different style
Headlamp#Headlamp styling in the United States.2C 1940 1983s, larger bumpers, and fewer engines were offered. The models sold in North America were: Base, "GL", "S", "STI", "DL", "LIBERTE", "STX", "TURBO", "GLX", "SW8", "V6", and in 1983 the "Anniversary Edition", which was sold in a limited quantity. All "North-American Bound" 505's were built in Peugeot's Sochaux Plant, in France.
